Ms. Tweedy

Ms. Tweedy My name is Zann Tweedy and I currently teach Fourth Grade Elementary classes. We start our day with Wilson/Language Arts/Vocabulary. We then do Foundations of Communications/Spelling, followed by Math and Social Skills Development. After lunch, I teach Social Studies and PE/Healthy for Life. I teach Art on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with assistance by Ms. Harvell. I teach Music on Thursday and Friday assisted by Mrs. Snyder. I received an Associate of Arts & Sciences from Central Virginia Community College with a major in General Studies. Later in life, I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology/Special Education from Lynchburg College. In March, I will have taught at NVS for 11 years. I am currently endorsed to teach children K-12 with an endorsement to work with students with Learning Disabilities.

 

Wilson Reading: 
Instruction focuses on and incorporates the following elements:

  • phonemic awareness direct instruction of word analysis, prosody and comprehension
  • coordination of reading and spelling instruction
  • intensive, cumulative instruction
  • teaching for mastery

 

Foundations of Communications:
Instruction consists of but is not limited to

  • learning how to approach and complete reading and writing skills
  • exploring strategies to effectively integrate reading, writing, speaking and listening skills as an essential study skill across the curriculum
  • Develop and use positive and appropriate social skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening

 

Virginia Studies:
Skills studied merge the following objectives:

  • use skills for historical and geographical investigation
  • Enriching our student’s knowledge of the state of Virginia including Early Virginia, Virginia’s Independent Spirit, Civil War and Reconstruction in our state, The Twentieth Century growth of Virginia and contributions, and the growth of the state yesterday, today and tomorrow.

 

4th grade Math:
The students will explore how to learn and develop:

  • An understanding of numbers and number sense.
  • Solve problems involving estimation and computations.
  • An understanding of U. S. Customary and Metric measurement.
  • Skills in probability and statistics.

 

Social Skills Development:
Social Skills Development does not have a specific curriculum, but rather a collection
of practices that use a behavioral approach for teaching elementary age-appropriate social skills and competencies. This would include but it not limited to:

  • Communication
  •  problem solving
  • decision making
  •  self-management
  • peer relations

 

Healthy for Life/PE –Elementary:
School Healthy for Life/PE classes are held every afternoon during 7th period block. During this time, students are able to participate in basketball, baseball, volleyball, kickball, tennis, soccer, and football and on occasion a mile-long walk.  We also engage in classroom discussions of health related topics including nutrition, exercise, and appropriate lifestyle choices needed to be “healthy for life”.
